Peter Lowentraut manufactured this brace which is a combination wrench/bit brace that was patented by Samuel J. Johnston of Leesburg, Virginia, patent number 674,735, issued on May 21, 1901.
This particular example is in extremely fine condition with the nickel plating still in tact. The wooden wrist grip and head are in fine condition and combine with the plating and the brass knob to make a beautiful stunning example of this brace.
“20th Century” is cast into the front frame for the jaws noting that this was patented at the dawn of the 20th Century, an milestone for that time. Because of this, the brace is often referred to as the “20th Century” brace.
This example has inscribed on the face of the stationary jaw on the one side, “TERRITORIES FOR SALE SJ JOHNSTON LEESBURG VA.” On the other side of the stationary jaw is inscribed, “P. LOWENTRAUT MFG. NEWARK N.J.” On the top frame near the wingnut to open and close the jaws is inscribed the patent date, May 21, 1901. All the markings are clearly visible.
The following excerpts from the patent show the versatility of the combination tool and how it can be changed into different configuration.
“This invention relates to combination-tools, and has special reference to that type of combination-tools constructed principally in the form of a wrench and having interchangeable and adjustable elements associated therewith, where by the same may be conveniently converted into different forms of tools”
“To this end, the invention contemplates an improved construction of combination-tool having a main wrench portion with which is associated novel handle-fastening means and other elements which provide means for readily converting the device into a plain monkey and pipe wrench, a long-handled screw-driver, an S-wrench,* a carpenter’s brace, as a vertical or horizontal bench-vise, as a plain short screw-driver, as a glass-cutter, and into such other useful adaptations as the combination and arrangement of parts will permit.”
“In carrying out the invention the same has specially in view a novel form of handle-fastening which is associated with the wrench proper and is capable of attachment thereto either substantially in line with or at right angles to the tool or wrench shank, in combination with a novel form of detachable stem, which serves not only as a supporting or carrying stem for the handle, but also sub-serves an independent function as a tool-stem the same being capable of independent use either as a short screw-driver or as a glass-cutting tool.”
*”The parts arranged with the handle attached at right angles to the tool or wrench shank to form what is knowm in the trade as an “S-Wrench,” especially useful in connection with wagon and carriage fixtures.”
The head, quill and back portion of the frame is removable and the brass knob can be loosened to adjust the position of the handle in regard to the wrench shank. In this configuration, either side of the jaws can be used depending on whether you are using it as a monkey or pipe wrench .
